Drawing Near To Worship Our God

What is worship all about? Worshipping a deity is as old as man and not limited to Christianity. Idol worship. Worship comes from our English word meaning worthship. To view something or someone worthy of regard or attention. Worship is a serious activity and those who do it must think carefully about the privilege given them.

           We worship by invitation from God. Hebrews 10:14-20. The privilege of worship is given to us not by us. God does not allow us the how or with attitude we can worship him. God alone has this right. He has invited us to worship him and tells us how we are to do this with the correct attitude we are to approach him. Hebrews 10:21-25. We worship God only because he has granted us the right to come before him. And the reason he grants us this privilege is because his son took away out sins. Only then do we stand qualified to stand in God’s presence and honor him.

           But the only way this invitation will be accepted is if we desire to worship him. Vs.22. worship—do we count God worthy of our attention? Is that the reason you assemble? Or did you think you could score points with God and impress your brothers and sisters that you are a faithful servant. We must come to him with the intent of honoring him. John 4:22-24. Our desire should be to please him.

            Worship must be reflective in our lives and reflective of the commitment we have made in our lives. vs. 22. We come before him showing our on personal unworthiness, but showing the worthiness of the blood of Christ for us to do so.

            Worship is something to be shared. Vs. 24, 25. While our primary is on our creator, our worship is to be communal, that is shared by everyone in a group. Our worship is to be beneficial to others, in such a way that they gain encouragement by being there. Vs. 25. If this is not occurring, then I need to check myself. Am I more of a distraction in that I do not help my brother or sister to be encouraged? If the commitment I have made in my life is reflective, then I will be one that gives encouragement. If not, then I am a source of discouragement.

            Let us commit ourselves to a more meaningful worship of God. Accept his invitation, desire to come before him, reflect upon your need for him. If you need to reevaluate your commitment because something is lacking when you come to worship, share this with the group you are with. This is what worship is about.
